Focus of the Final Paper

Develop a full critical analysis of one of the following short stories or poems we have read in this course.  The Yellow Wallpaper, Gilman
 The Story of an Hour, Chopin 

 Tape, Rivera

 The Things They Carried, O’Brien
 Cathedral, Carver
 A Rose for Emily, Carver
 Any poem from Chapter 24 or Chapter 25 (Kirszner & Mandell)

Analyze the selected short story or poem using at least one of the following types of critical theory.  Formalism and New Criticism
 Reader-Response criticism
 Feminist criticism

 Marxist criticism
 Psychoanalytical criticism
 Structuralism
 Deconstruction
 Cultural studies (including any approaches of cultural studies, including New Historicism, queer theory, and 

postcolonial studies)

The Final Paper must be eight to ten pages in length (excluding title and reference pages). You must use at least five scholarly sources, three of which must be found in the Ashford Online Library, to support your claims and subclaims. The Final Paper must be formatted according to APA style, and all sources must be properly cited in text as well as on the reference page.
